Swine flu, alien invasion (from outerspace, or maybe from the "undocumented" workers too..), political and economic upheaval, civil uprising...the below lists will prepare you for what's ahead. Can you bring down a buffalo with your bare hands? No, then you may need tools to fashion a spear! Don't forget about digging latreens, and building fortifications! Be prepared and have the essential tools when it is time!

Food and clean water, don't forget to stock up. - Where we are headed, there are no Costco's to pick up that jumbo dog and large Coke!
You are not going to last long against the hordes of invading zombies or swarms of locusts without food and clean water. Get these items while you can and you will be the most popular person in your neighborhood!
First aid and fire, pretty important stuff. - Ask a caveman, he will agree - fire and neosporin always come in handy.
You are going to need to tend to your wounds after the hand to hand combat with throngs of the undead, and you may want to cook a nice T-bone after you work up your appetite - don't forget first aid kits and fire!
You are going to need shelter! - Heading for the Mountains, stay warm and dry while hiding from the forces of Mordor.
Tents and sleeping bags are essential if you are going to survive a nuclear winter or an extended stay away from civilization. Sure it is not as restful as staying at the Holiday Inn, but better then rotting in the gulag!

Okay, you have the basic things to survive - water, food, tools, shelter, but don't forget these last few items to make your Armageddon survival kit complete: backpacks, canteens, tarps. Now you are ready for whatever natural or man made disaster is waiting for you!
